I found this top-rated in Consumer Reports. It seemed right for me, so I immediately bought it on line. I'm a light sleeper, getting up at least once a night. Since using the product I sleep deeper and rarely get up, if I do, I can easily sleep again.
My only complaint is the lights behind the selections, they should have setting options that dim even more than they do, as they act as a night light which keeps me awake, the very thing I'm trying to avoid. I use deep-colored Post-it notes to cover them or I use a sleep mask. Once the light is out, the sound goes to work and soothes me to slumber. I never use the timer, just keep the sound on all night. I've shared my delight with others who have sleep problems, I'm certain some will purchase as I did.
I'm trying to devise a cover to shut out all light yet not cover any of the back where the sound comes through the speakers.
I like the choices and vary them with my mood, Ocean Surf, Summer Night or Rain are my three favorites. When I'm very stressed I use the Celestial and picture myself in space escaping my earthly concerns.
After only six weeks I feel my quality of sleep must be improving, no more wakeful times in the middle of the night and have less afternoon fatigue.
In the past I have tried prescriptions, over-the-counter and herbal sleep aids, consumed gallons of chamomille tea. This little device is so simple and so natural that it's hard to believe it can be this effective. If I were not happily retired I would market it for you at the Senior Center...I often hear of sleep complaints in my age group.
If this continues to work this well it will add many productive hours to my week, no longer needing mid-day naps. Time will tell, but so far, so good.....no, great!

As a third shift worker, I have to have some sort of noise playing in the background in order to drown out noise from the outside. This sound machine works perfectly for that. However, one of the common struggles third shift workers experience is a way to make the bedroom as dark as possible from the sunlight. The light on the front of this machine is so bright that it completely illuminates my entire bedroom, that was otherwise dark from the use of light blocking curtains. There is a way to dim the light by holding down one of the buttons, but even at its dimmest level it is way too bright. Would it have been so difficult for the engineers/designers at Brookstone to include a way to shut of the light? Did they even bother to test this thing in a real world situation? If they did, they certainly did not test it with those of us who work third shift or are light sensitive. For this reason, I cannot recommend this otherwise great product.

I had the old cd player sound machine (wish they brought that back). Lasted several years. Went to purchase this and my favorite sleep sound was the crickets chirping. For some reason now when you listen to this particular sleep sound you hear this annoying hum after they chirp and it drove me crazy! Took it back and was disappointed, other than that, it was ok.

This is great for my husband who is a light sleeper. It's really reduced the amount of times he wakes up from city noises. The sounds are pleasant and not too artificial like some other machines. However, the blue light on the front is WAY TOO BRIGHT and lights up our whole bedroom. I had to cover the front of the unit with aluminum tape.

The night time sound helps me get to sleep the most out of all the sounds. I haven't used a sleep aide since getting this machine. Wish this had a dimmer or option to turn off the very bright light. I cover it with a hand towel to block out the light.

Not sure why you cant shut off the light if this product is a sleep aid. Most people that need help with sleeping dont want a bright light. No way to shut off. Even on the lowest setting it lights the whole room
