I discovered that some of the sounds are great just to have on during the day, too. They add a relaxing ambiance to the room. Some of the sounds are great for my study time (I'm a student).
The "sleep" function for the alarm is fantastic! All you do is touch the device and it sets.
The clock has a dimmer which I use. Some may like the night light feature but I prefer less light in the room at night.
Cons: The buttons on the sides are cumbersome to push, two hands are needed, one on each side of the device to steady it. All of the buttons have a loud clicking noise when pushed. Which my husband loves since he likes to hear the sound as though it gives him a sense that the task is accomplished. I don't like it. Again, the dimmer button clicks loudly and I have to roll over in bed and grasp the device w/ two hands. If I want to change the sound it only takes one hand since the buttons for that feature are on top but each push of the button is loud and may disturb a sleeping partner.
Still, the cons are outweighed by the pros. This was pricey but worth it. I expect many years of happy use.

Problems when 4 AA batteries installed

I received this as a Christmas present from my wife. I put 4 brand new AA batteries in because I thought they were a back up if the power went out, and also plugged it into the wall. I started using it shortly there after when falling asleep. I found it to be relaxing and helped me drift off.
About 2 weeks later, the clock appeared to have died-no lights, no sounds. I unplugged it and removed the batteries and took it to the Brookstone store where it was purchased. The person at the store plugged it in and it worked fine. I was a little puzzled as I have an electrical engineering degree and was sure it was 'dead'.
I brought it back home, re-installed the batteries and plugged it back in-nothing. I tried a few different outlets that I knew worked, still nothing. I left the batteries in and took it back to the store again. The same guy plugged it in and it was dead. He then removed the batteries, plugged it in and it worked fine. He explained that it didn't work with Duracel batteries, and that I needed to purchase Brookstone batteries if I wanted to use it with the power cord plugged in. (It did work for 2 weeks with both the batteries and the power cord plugged in) This seems very strange to me.
My guess is there is some kind of design flaw that is causing the unit to not to work if the AA batteries lose some of their charge (one of the circuits is going into an indeterminate state due to the lower voltage; but I'll spare you the electronics lingo). I would expect the unit to continue to function WHILE STILL PLUGGED IN, even if the batteries aren't 100%. Unless the batteries are brand new, this will not work. I am very disappointed given the $160+ price tag.

I suffer from Sleep Apenia and I use a machine to sleep. The product helps with my other sleep disorder insomia. The clock helps to relax me into a state of sleep. Great product.

The variety of choices is great. This helps significantly for me, because I would wake during the night and have difficulty getting back to sleep. The sound machine works like a charm to return to sleep very quickly.

My husband and I have an old version of this unit; it's approximately 15 years old. While it works just fine - the problem is the volume level switch that doesn't work quite right anymore to adjust volume. It also crackles quite loud when trying to adjust.
We thought it was time for a new version and proudly went to the Brookstone store to make the purchase.
We took it back in less than a week. My biggest complaint about clocks anymore is that the lighting of the actual clocks are TOO BRIGHT to get any sleep. Seriously...dim lighting is best for shut-eye.
Second, the alarm starts out normal volume, however if you do not turn it off within a second or two, it becomes louder and louder and LOUDER - which is completely unacceptable, and the farthest from soothing you into a conscious state of mind.
We just plugged our old unit back into the wall; we'll deal with the crackling volume knob.

Stress has become part of my daily life as a first year law student. It is difficult to relax enough to make the few hours per week I can devote to sleep even count. I was recently given this alarm clock as a gift, and I already notice a difference. Each sound setting is unique to the others, offering different sources of comfort and relxation. I use different sounds while I read, sleep, and wake up. Where stress is always lingering, this alarm clock has made a noticeable difference in my sleep and study habits.

Use this every night. Pick the sound I want to fall asleep with and there you go. Fall asleep very quickly even though I have the sound set for a 90 minute interval I never make it past a couple of minutes. Very restful sleep. People have said its a little pricey but it is worth it.
