The difference between a remote controlled car or helicopter is the device that controls the toy. When you use an app on your smart phone, it is called an app controlled toy, app toy, or smart toy. The maneuvering is the same, the toggles even look and feel the same.
These remote controlled toys are self-contained in that they are working on set frequencies to transmit (the device held) and receive signal (the car, helicopter, etc.). How far the toy goes from the transmitter, depends on the signal and range defined by the manufacturer.
