Job: Intellectual Property Legal Intern – for Law School Credit

SUMMARY:

Brookstone’s Legal Department in Merrimack, NH is seeking a legal intern to assist in the handling of a variety of intellectual property related assignments upon the request and under the direction of Brookstone’s Intellectual Property Counsel. During this internship, the ideal candidate will provide research on projects and legal issues, review contracts, assist in conducting patent and trademark clearances and drafting patent and trademark applications, attend department and committee meetings as requested, and support other Legal Department paralegals and attorneys as requested. This position is ideal for a candidate with an intellectual property law background and/or who is interested in intellectual property experience in a corporate environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

The ideal candidate is a current law student having completed two full years of law study by June 2014.

Job: Industrial Designer

SUMMARY:

Responsible for all Industrial Design phases of a select range of Brookstone Laboratory projects in various stages of development and variety of scales. Responsible for gathering and understanding all project-related information and co-developing necessary phase documentation throughout a project, developing and adhering to project schedules, refining appropriate design concepts, reviewing work with the Brookstone Lab team and with the Merchant partner for strategic, creative and developmental direction. Working in partnership with both internal and external vendor engineering and quality resources to realize design intent through to production by being a proactive and vocal spokesperson for projects under their control from project inception to production.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

Supports the industrial design activities within the Brookstone Product Development Process for Brookstone Laboratory projects. Activities include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Assist in developing specific project criteria and industrial design goals.
  • Assist in maintaining project schedules, enforce project-to-project priorities set by the Project Director.
  • Assist in developing industrial design concepts that maximize utility, usability and desire amongst Brookstone’s target customers.
  • Assist in developing solutions that achieve cost goals for the product as well as fit within the selected manufacturer’s core competencies.
  • Able to understand and find the balance between the rational aspects (features, ergonomics, manufacturability) and the emotional aspects (desirability, communicative qualities, lifestyle fit, etc.) of a successful product.
  • Provide and defend a supporting case for a design direction or detail choices.
  • Proactively partner with internal and external Engineering and QA teams to realize design intent throughout the engineering stages and then on through to production.
  • Maintain a level of understanding of materials and manufacturing processes to guide the development of achievable and cost-appropriate design concepts.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining appropriate 3D CAD and other design based software skills to effectively communicate with the entire product development team.
  • Maintain a proactive and engaged presence through out the duration of the design and post-design release phases of a project.
  • Develop and maintain a professional rapport and time-sensitive dialog with Asian sourcing agents, project managers, and manufacturing partners.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Essential: A bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design along with a minimum of 3 - 6 years work experience in a consumer product development environment. Demonstrable ability to identify and capture critical communication points for a given product, as well as achieve emotionally and rationally balanced design solutions that Brookstone customers will respond to. Hands-on experience in all phases of product development, knowledge of various materials, exposure to a variety of manufacturing and assembly processes. Basic to intermediate level knowledge of Solidworks 3D-Surface based CAD as well as other industry standard software tools (ie: Key Shot, Rhino, Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Freehand, etc.)

A team player with a strong work ethic who is willing to go above and beyond ("whatever it takes" attitude) to deliver time critical assignments without sacrificing design intent. Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and a strong project management skill set is required. Capable of thriving in an diverse product design environment with a passion for developing design solutions that consistently exceed business objectives.

Desired: Strong 3D Surfacing CAD skills, work experience with Asian manufacturers, 3 + years in a corporate product development environment.

Job: Allocations Analyst

SUMMARY:

The Allocations Analyst is responsible for maintaining appropriate stock levels in stores. This is accomplished by participation in pre-season planning at the SKU level and in-season forecasting at the Store/SKU level.   • Oversee, define, personally transact, and/or influence all manner of supply chain planning and related Allocation of inventory by sku from the Distribution Center to the entire retail store chain utilizing the Distribution Requirements Planning System, Access-based Allocation tools and Island Pacific based methods.
  • Issue resolution in the Enterprise Demand Management (EDM) system and maintenance of the Logility Distributions Requirements Planning (DRP) system and the Planning parameters resident in the Island Pacific System.
  • Analysis including stock balancing, recalls, presentation and distribution quantities, promotion support, and inventory issues.

SUMMARY:

Overall responsibility for 8 to 12 Stores. Maximizes sales and 4-Wall while controlling Store and District expenses at approved budgetary levels. Ensures and maintains Brookstone’s high quality standards in all human resource, operational and merchandising functions.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Sales Generation:

  1. Attain established sales and profit (4-Wall) goals through the leadership of sales-oriented Store Sales Managers that maintain a Customer-focused selling culture.
  2. Ensure a high sense of urgency is given to meeting and exceeding established sales goals on company programs.
  3. Model effective sales and engagement leadership behaviors.
  4. Review sales, productivity, contests and other key statistical reports on a daily/weekly/monthly basis and take aggressive action to capitalize on opportunities.
  5. Ensure a high level of participation at Store level in Company contests, promotional activities, mall and community events, etc.
Talent Management:

  1. Identify, recruit, hire and retain top talent, continuously reviewing Store staff to identify staffing and succession opportunities.
  2. Motivate, inspire and challenge Store teams to achieve results.
  3. Recognize individual and team achievements and contributions.
  4. Attain sales results through effective and ongoing coaching, teaching and training (Customer Service, merchandising, loss prevention, product knowledge) and performance management.
  5. Work closely with Store Management and their teams to ensure ongoing professional growth and development.
  6. Ensure compliance with State and Local Laws through: (a) Store Management that is trained in established human resources practices. (b) recruitment, placement and performance management programs that are administrated with fairness and consistency and are free of unlawful discrimination.
Merchandising/ Visual Standards:

  1. Review individual Store Plan-O-Gram to ensure consistency in presentation. Participate in updating merchandise presentation relative to District needs and Company direction.
  2. Ensure high standards in Store appearance.
  3. Ensure Store Associates are trained in merchandising techniques; review Store merchandise assortments, replenishment and content, and communicate needs to Inventory Management.
Operations/Loss Prevention/Expense Control:

  1. Control Store payroll expenses by complying with budgets.
  2. Ensure that the Stores are maximizing the effectiveness of Store work schedules.
  3. Budget and monitor Stores’ controllable expenses and ensure conformance with established guidelines and objectives.
  4. Ensure company policies, procedures and standards are effectively implemented.
  5. In partnership with the Loss Prevention Department, take appropriate action to achieve established shortage goals or reduce shortage
REQUIREMENTS:

Essential:
  • Minimum of three years in multi-unit, multi-market management (has managed at least five Stores), preferably with a specialty store retailer.
  • Sales driven.
  • Strong communication, teaching and coaching skills.
  • Demonstrated record of effective leadership.
  • Strong analytical ability.
  • Well organized, with good time management skills.

Store Sales Manager
  • Responsible for managing one store.
  • Innovatively manages the Store by driving sales performance and controlling expenses.
  • Attracts and develops Store Management and Sales Associates who can successfully close sales with our Customers.
  • Previous retail management experience required, including responsibility for total Store operations.
Assistant Store Sales Manager
  • Assists the Store Sales Manager in all aspects of managing the Store and driving sales performance as detailed above.
  • Previous retail management experience required.
Second Assistant Store Sales Manager
  • This is an entry-level, non-exempt Management position.
  • Assists the Store Sales Management team in maximizing sales performance, both individually and through effectively directing the Sales Associates.
  • Previous retail experience, preferably with some supervisory experience.
Seasonal Manager and Seasonal Assistant Manager
  • During the second half of the year (generally, anytime between mid-Summer through December), Brookstone opens temporary/seasonal Stores throughout the country that close no later than during the week after December 25th.
  • These are hourly-paid positions.
  • The duties of the Seasonal Manager mirror those of the Assistant Store Sales Manager above, and the duties of the Seasonal Assistant Manager mirror those of the 2nd Assistant Store Sales Manager above.
Sales Associate
  • Able to actively and warmly engage the Customer and develop an instant rapport.
  • Meet individual sales goals by using in-depth product knowledge and selling skills.
  • Previous sales experience is helpful.
