It is about 3/16", so the gadget won't work on really narrow grooves. The grooves in my deck are wide enough, but some of the grooves in my stairs are narrower than the blade, so it won't work. The fir needles and general debris from the Pacific NW can accumualte quickly and lead to rot. This tool made fast work of cleaning the entire deck. Previously we have used hacksaw blades, wire, compressed air, and pressure washers. This beat them all, did not damage the decking, and took about 30% of the time. I was going to make a similar tool, but highly encourage you to just purchase this one and get started. A highered yard worker also used it to remove weeds between 2 foot square pavers in my back patio. Worked great doing that, too. It Really Works! There is a lot of build up of leaf material, wood, and nuts that get stuck inbetween the wood decking. This cleaner does a wonderful jod of loosening and removing the accumulated debris. The two things that bother me are (1) the shaft is too short for me. I am 6'2" and have to bend over to use the cleaner which leads to backackes. (2) The rubber grip is loose and slides off. I think I will try to glue it on. I have a composite deck and the spaces between the boards is very narrow. Seeds, leaves, and pine needles get wedged in the cracks and even a power nozzle won't dislodge most of the debris. The crevice tool has a thin but sturdy blade that easily clears out the cracks. I'm short and the handle is the perfect length - it might not be long enough for a tall person. My husband is into bonsai, and the little pebbles also find their way into the cracks - this handles it all beautifully. I would like it to be longer, but the only real comoplaint I have is that the grip slips off fairly easily if you pull with any force at all.
