After a couple of disappointing experiences with record converters, this device provided a good, easy to use, method of digitizing records to my laptop via USB. Many laptops and budget computers lack line in audio ports, so finding a machine with stereo USB output was important. The Ion turntable delivers on its promises: economical, easy to use, and useful principally for ripping LPs to computer files via Windows. It has basic tonearm adjustments (tracking force, anti-skate), and a convenient latch locks the arm down when not in use. The cartridge seems of adequate quality and, unlike other brands in this price range, is removable and replaceable. The belt-drive platter is smooth and quiet, and Ion includes a pad to cushion the vinyl. Controls are a bit goofy: there are Play/Stop buttons on two corners of the unit, the power button is tucked somewhat awkwardly just to the left of the tonearm mount, while the speed buttons are right in front), and dropping the needle into a groove is a strictly manual affair. A dust cover is included, although it's lift-off, not hinged, and while there's a 45 spindle adapter, there's no place to park it when not in use. Outputs include USB, line-out with adjustable gain, and phono (the last two via a single set of RCA plugs that can be toggled between them). The included software is rudimentary, and does not function as well with Macintosh as it does with Windows. No one's going to mistake the Ion unit for audiophile quality, but if you're interested in making mp3 files from your old LPs, or occasionally reveling in the warmth (and hiss and pop!) of old records, you could do a whole lot worse.

Using the easy program, it is very easy to record. However, the more sophisticated program is entirely out of my understanding. Bought to convert vinyl to cd. It is a piece of undesirable lightweight plastic compared to the durable metal turntables of old and its performance is on par with its construction. The sound lacks the true fullness one would expect for this price. Set-up of hardware is complicated. Software relatively simple but lacking in range of options. Looking into possibility of using my old metal turntable somehow with computer.

I gave this to my husband for Christmas with a little trepidation, hoping it was not just a gadget. He has been using it daily converting his vast classical selection of LPs to CDs. Being able to convert them to his computer and then to the CD gives him more leeway than converting directly to CDs. At first, the sound did not work, and all we heard was feedback. After calling the technical help desk, I found out that the webcam on the computer was using the same driver as the turntable, so I had to disconnect the webcam. After that, it worked perfectly. I loved the feature that allowed you type in the artist and first song, and then the Gracenote program provided the rest of the album information. Be careful to click "new track" between tracks, or you will import several songs as one track. Also, I loved the fact that all songs were immediately imported to my iPod. The only real drawback is the fact that you have to sit there the entire time clicking between each new track. If you have lots of time on your hands, then it's no problem. My dad has hundreds of old albums and 78s to put on his iPod now. He is really enjoying this gift. We liked the turntable so much that we're now going to buy the cassette deck to import old cassette tapes to digital format for the iPod.

The ION USB turntable works well--it was easy to set up and get started. However, it is constructed of very lightweight plastic and feels pretty fragile, so you'll want to handle it with care. The main caveat I have is about the software—of the two types included, I had good results only with Audacity. The "EZ"-type software produced very poor sound quality files—unusable, in my view. With Audacity there is a bit of a learning curve as it is a more complex program, and it is therefore more time-consuming to use as well. Note to Mac users: there is an extra step to download a plug-in to get the Audacity interface up-and-running—a minor inconvenience and it's easy to configure, but once again the lack of Mac-friendliness in the software is irritating.

While considering the return/exchange of another product, I encountered this one in the Brookstone store. I have long wanted to be able to convert old LPs to a digital format and found this product to be reasonably priced, easy to use, and very applicable to my needs. The only down side is having to play the entire selection while recording rather than being able to "rip" through multiple tracks in a short period of time without needing to listen to, or play each one individually. If you have the time to devote, this is an easy and (thus far) reliable way to make those conversions from vinyl to digital.

Having a large collection of really old 78's in addition to LP's, by using "Audacity" software, I am able to rip at 45 RPM and convert/edit to 78 RPM. A little learning curve, but worth the effort to salvage those great old recordings and transfer them to CD. Of course I would have found the whole thing easier if this was a 3 speed player as I would have been able to enjoy listening as I record.

I have a bunch of old LPs, including some obscure stuff that's no longer available. I've talked with others who do LP-CD conversions, but it's always seemed too involved for me. The ION seemed like a better alternative, and it is. The setup had me scratching my head once, but the troubleshooting menu actually helped solve it. Also, after you record each side, the software automatically looks up track information on-line; if your stuff is non-commercial (or not music), you can save time & aggravation here by unplugging from the internet and inputting your own track info. Once underway,you'll want to get your LPs CLEAN--but just this one last time! A dust cover would have been a nice feature. Overall: not perfect, but VERY worth it.

This turntable is easy to set up and use. The sound of my vinyl is better than I remembered, and I have enjoyed "flashing" back to the past and listening to LPs and 45's from my youth. I was even able to convert a recording made of my high school choir - obviously not available on the commercial market - and that's been a wonderful treat. The only drawback is that the turntable needs a cover to protect it from dust and damage when it's not being used.

I was surprised to see how long it took to download software and then connect to the internet to download from iTunes. When I discovered the input for tapes, I really got excited and began copying my favorite tapes to CD's. I did have to buy a cord to connect from the turntable to the cassette deck. The tapes sound great on the CD's, but I forgot how the scratches on my records might sound. Not as good as I hoped for.

Setting up the turntable was fairly easy. I used my own cartridge and balance scale instead of the cartridge supplied. The software supplied is pretty basic, and requires attention to demarcate tracks. I ended up using the open source audacity software, which was somewhat complicated to setup.

All in all, the process worked, but is fairly labor intensive. Better software would help tremendously. The turntable quality is decent and the resulting mp3s sounded fine.

Great gift idea for my dad! He played his LPs all the time but when Katrina ate his stereo system, he looked like someone took away his favorite toy. He loves the ION because he can play it at home AND now he can listen to them in his car too!

After loading the software, I was backing up my LP's in no time. now I can listen to my LP's anywhere.
The only problem I have had, sometimes
after filling in the info (title,artist,album).
It loads into my library labeled TEMPO. No big deal,edit later.

Great idea but poor documentation. It's taken me 5 tries to copy one album There is no help for the vinyl set-up before it goes to iTunes. Once I mastered that, I had no direction for the iTunes. After many errors and deletions, using "help" I finally had a decent set-up to copy. My daughter went through the same problems when she was copying. Why not have a manual with step-by-step directions from the beginning to the final burn? Once we did a few albums we were comfortable with copying from vinyl to cd.

I got this for my mom. She is VERY computer savvy and loves it. She's having a lot of fun listening to her old records and converting them to computer files and cds. The only thing she said was that it was harder for her to make indiviual tracks b/c she has a Mac. She also wishes it came with speakers b/c once she's done converting she'd like to use it as a turntable in another room. But she's really enjoying it.

My husband inherited an enormous collection of 78's from his father. He had a turntable in his home office where he could enjoy listening to them, but he couldn't enjoy them anywhere else. I gave him the ION LP Ripping Turntable for Christmas. Even though he is NOT technically savvy, he was able to set up the system by himself and is now using the software to turn his 78's into CD's he can play everywhere. We are both delighted.

This was a (pleasant) surprise gift for Christmas. Set-up was a little tricky, especially balancing the tone arm and configuring the Windows OS (XP). Following the instructions for XP worked for the turntable, but it disabled my USB headset or VOIP.

I purchased this for my teenage son, because we have a large set of vinyl records in the attic. He liked the music (60's mostly, plus some classical and easy listening). This product allows him to transfer the records to his hard drive, and play them whenever he wants. He also can play them directly to his speakers, independent of the computer. It's always difficult to find a gift that suits someone his age, and this was a hit (thank goodness).

The results are excellent, but it takes time. The software has no pause function. You have to create dummy tracks to skip songs or turn the LP over. Then delete them in iTunes. If iTunes decides to go unstable when starting the transfer, you have to reboot and start over. It would be nice to have the option to transfer to Windows Media Player.

Best solution I've seen for converting vinyl to CDs. Setup fairly easy. The biggest problem is that you can't minimze the software while recording, so you can't multi-task on the web during the process.

I'd been looking for an economical way to convert some old LPs into CDs, and this was a great solution - easy to set up and use. I also like how it is compatible with iTunes. It gave me the ability to save the LPs to my hard drive, create my own mixes and duplicate onto as many CDs as I needed.

The EZ Vinyl Converter software is easier to figure out than the Audacity software, as long as you don't care about editing the sound.

This produst was simple to setup and hookup to the computer. Ripping from your records can get back tracks that never was printed as a CD. One down side is the software, it is shareware and the edit functions leave a lot to be in another audio program.

I use Magixs to capture the LP because the free software is not up to the quality of the Ion. I do love having my LPs on disc for use in the car & in video as background music. I would appreciate a good dust cover as mine isn't going into the closet any time soon.

Once initial set up was completed which was a bit complicated using it is just a case of plodding through your vinyl collection. Can be time consuming by having to take out all the cracks etc with the software but it works very well. Only problem is you have to store the mp3 files in a folder where iTunes looks for them; this will be one big file eventually unless you burn to CD, delete the files then load back into iTunes. At least then you have a backup copy on CD and you can then ditch the vinyl.

It's great to have my vinyl music digitized. The sound quality isn't as good as a CD--the turntable picks up every little scratch that's on a vinyl. But I wouldn't be listening to them otherwise!

So you grew up when 8-tracks still existed and transitioned to cassettes and LPs and reluctantly got into CDs and MP3 players, well this turntable is a good investment if you can figure out its learning curve. Don't expect a breezy transition at first but once you get the hang of it, it's not bad.

This turntable and software makes it very easy to convert 33rpm and 45rpm records to WAV and MP3 files. in the past I used a turntable, amplifier, computer with sound card and its own software. It was a very slow process and expensive to buy all the components and I still did not have all of the functionallity of this system.

Product is OK, Software to get music into itunes needs some work. Having troubles dividing lps into tracks on computer, and very time consuming. Does not have good resolution if you transfer lps at high rpm and adjust in your computer. I really need to go bad and give this another try.
