This has a wide appeal for geek entertainment as well, when the gadget announces, "Your entre is almost ready." That is, once you've been able to pair the transmitter with the receiver. This is unnecessarily difficult and there have been times when I could not get it to work at all. But the times I have, once paired, it works marvelously, takes the gueswork out of grilling. I just wish they'd fix the synchronization. this should not be complicated.

To get the transmitter to sync with the receiver you must remove the battery cover on the receiver and push a VERY small button then within 60 seconds push another one on the transmitter.
The probe is VERY sensitive and you can easily blow it out if it overheats.
Don't waste your money on this thing.

The unit is awesome, however it does not come without issues. Be very careful not to overheat the temperature probe. Lets say you have tri-tip with a layer of fat that creates an internal grease fire while you are away. The temperature inside the dome of your BBQ will rise to a very high level. This high temperature will blow out your probe and you will have to replace it. I'm on my 4th or 5th probe. I still love this gadget and would purchase again, but now I have made myself much more aware of flame-ups. It will work best for you with leaner meats and roasts. You will know when this happens to you as the unit will beep and beep with a 199F flashing. Don't even mess with trying to reset it, it's cooked and needs a replacement probe. About $15.00 from Brookstone. I have been using the unit for about 4 years now and we bbq about 5-6 nights a week year around. I stocked up on two backup probes. Hope this helps. Yes, get one!

Easily the coolest, neatest grill thermometer I have ever used. Perfect for grilling a couple steaks on a very cold day. Plug the sensor into the side of one steak (so you can flip the steak) and start grilling. While grilling you can walk inside to the warm comfort of your home. Extremely easy to use; take out of box, clean, insert remote unit, and "you're cooking". Remote unit intuitive to use.
Problem is that it wasn't accurate - kept waiting for the turkey to get done, including shifting the probe to several different areas. Did a check with a simple oven thermometer - probe was about 15 degrees too low.

I don't ever cook a piece of meat with out this! First things first... my first one lasted 5 years and need 2 additional probes. The probe wire is delicate and you must be careful not to pinch it in the oven door or bend it to tight while storing it. The only other thing that needs to be mentioned is the temps are set for Rare to Well (not taking into effect the resting time and the increasing of the temp when the meat is removed from the heat.) I would recommend to set temp for one setting below what you want to get accurate results. I just purchased my second gril alert and would absolutely buy a third .

I am sure it will work with our grill too. We bought a backup probe as well. Like running our of propane, I can envision it breaking in the middle of a cookout...when else would this item break?

I've had one of these for several years now and have been extremely happy with it. When I went to purchase a similar product as a gift for being a house guest, I purchased a competing product. After using it 2-3 times, it produced terribly inconsistent results and I just couldn't trust it. I returned it and purchased this one. Yes, it is a bit more expensive than the competition, but it is the only one that really works. The only downside is that it doesn't allow for adjustment of the temperature. Well, that isn't too hard to fix; you just watch the temperature readout.

The thermometer functions well. However, I really don't like the notion that the temperature range has been chosen for me. If I want a rare tuna steak, or a pink pork tenderloin, the only way to get it it to use the beef setting. The beef setting is the only one with a reasonable temperature range. Also, many cooks like me still keep an eye on the clock. It is wierd that, while everything with electrical power seems to have a clock, this device does not have a timer.

I got this as a gift for my boyfriend. We enjoy having BBQs and I thought he would enjoy not having to be stuck next to the grill. The thermometer is very handy in that he does not have to worry if the meat is overcooking while socializing. The remote speaks loudly and clearly when the meat is almost ready and ready. The remote also shows how close the meat is to being finished. The downside is that the thermometer is built for only one type of meat at a time. So, if you are having a BBQ with more than one type of food you still have to be near the grill or use the thermometer for a piece of meat you know will cook quickest and then switch the probe and reprogram the thermometer for the remaining foods as needed. All in all, it is a neat tool to have while grilling and so far my boyfriend seems to enjoy it! This is a good gift to get someone.

Each entree we have prepared has been cooked perfectly with no "back and forth" checking of the entree, or no returns to the grill for "a little more time." This is the only touchy thing about Grill Alert.

This is a great tool. For father's day I purchase a 2 inch thick Ribeye (about 30 oz. each) and grill them. I put the steaks directly over the fire. Some years the fire is hotter than others, however, using this tool the steaks always come out perfect: medium rare for me and the wife, and medium to well for my guests. I highly recommend this tool. Be careful not to get the probe over 500 degrees, though. It can "cook" the probe and kill it. Fortunately you can purchase additional probes.

I was looking for a fun gift for my technologically advanced husband, and it was a great find: it is wireless, it has a remote temperature sensor, and it talks. Don't recall DH being so amused with any other gift.

He did say that you just have to make sure the probe is in the thickest part of the meat and pushed far enough in to the middle. Definitely worth the money!

I used the Grill alert when smoking or cooking large meats that take several minutes or hours. For example Turkey, Chicken, or Brisket. I haven't used it for smaller cuts of meat. We like fish slightly moist. There is no choice to adjust cooking temp for fish, chicken, turkey, pork and hamburger. Also, some prepared foods come with instructions to cook to a certain temp. I assumed that any cooking thermometer would allow this.

I used it to roast the turkey this year and it came out perfectly. It's very easy to set but you must use the temperatures that are preset for a particular meat. For example, in cooking the turkey I had to use the Hamburger medium setting so that it would alert me when it was at 160 degrees. Turkey is preset to 170 degrees.
I like being able to see the temperature as the meat is cooking.

This remote thermometer is great especially if you like to grill in the winter. I used it on Thanksgiving while grilling a turkey and it was nice to not have to keep going outside to check the temperature. It would be better if you could set specific temperatures rather than using pre-sets though.

Worked well for about 10 times, then went "kaput". I am hoping it's just the probe...even if it is, I would say it is not very durable. Also, I found mine to be about 5 degrees off...meaning if you want your steak @ 135 degrees, stop when the thermometer reads 130.

I really like the concept. The remote function still works after three years and even after getting hot enough to melt the plastic housing.
One major issue, the wires in the braided sheilding break very easily where stainless steel tube is crimped around the braiding. That should be improved. I have had to replace 4 probes in 3 years.

It is difficult to get the sensor to communicate with the transmitter. I used it once and have been unsuccessful since. I have recommnended it assuming I have a defective part since the idea is good.

After one year I replaced the probe, which the stores do not carry. The new probe did not make a differece. I preplaced it with a different brand for 1/2 the price and it worked the second year.
