Concept meet Mouse

Being a bit skeptical about this at first but I am not sold on it. It CAN be installed on a MAC and Windows Machine! I travel a lot and carry a MacBook Air. The disc that comes with the mouse does not have the a Mac Driver so you have to visit the brookstone website (http://www.brookstone.com/scanner-mouse?bkiid=body_zone|hmpg|a|cat3|giftsunder100|817873p) then click on product specs, once there you will see the link to download the Mac and the windows drivers. I had to download the windows driver from the site because the driver on the disc would not install, it would hang up and fail. However once I downloaded the driver from Brookstone it installed without a hitch. I have been happy with this product because it duels as a mouse and a scanner so it helps to alleviate carrying extra peripherals, plus it is very light weight and fits nicely into a business proffessional who tries to carry computer equipment to a messenger bag or a laptop bag carry on. As opposed the neat recipe, which is bigger and heavier and it just a scanner, and it is cheaper too.
The mouse is about a mediam sized body, so about average size for a mouse. Larger then the microsoft traveling mice. The mouse tracks well and smoothly.
However, I did discover to my disappointment that it only saves to a JPEG format, but if you can print to PDF then you are set and instead of saving your scan just print it and then print it as a PDF. The program itself will not allow one to save to PDF directly. It is very quick and the stitching of the scanned area is very fast. I would say a must for any constant traveler who needs to keep receipts and send them off on the road or someone who just want a quick easy portable scanner.
Granted there are other ones out there that scan at a higher DPi then 320, but they also cost more.

I reload the (Mac) software every time it crashes - which is about 20% of the times I use it. When it works it is a very useful, portable, (take it to the library and save copying charges) device. Brookstone customer support keep telling me they will get back to me but never do.
When they get the software right this will be a great device.

I am often in situations where no printer is available, this allows me to my own ntoes for clients, notes from clients. It's a very handy tool. Previously had a scanner wand and was very unhapppy with the way it scanned. This works like a charm!

The OCR is excellent: extremely accurate and fast. However, for reasons that I don't understand, the scanner on the bottom of the mouse is on the left side. As a result, if you are trying to scan a book, when you scan a page on your left, the mouse will not scan the right-most part of the text unless you move it over to partly cross onto the right-most page, which usually causes the scanning to be corrupted. You must instead turn the book upside down to get those left-most pages.
Suggestions:
1. One solution would have been to place the scanner lengthwise across the bottom of the mouse.
2. The software is good, but it could be made more efficient: To paste text into a Word doc, you must now click on Paste and then on Paste as text. Moving the choices up the button level would make this simpler.
3. You can also drag an icon over to the Word doc to paste the scan as text automatically, but this icon is on the far right of the interface. If this icon was on the far left, it would be easier to use. May seem like a small thing, but if you are scanning several pages, and use a large monitor, this rearrangement would be valuable.
3. The method of changing the orientation of the scan is good. However, a single Invert button to turn an image upside down would save much time.
4. There is an added button click that is not needed: Once the text or image is scanned in and one has the orientation one wants, you must click on OK and then choose to paste it in or save it, etc. Why not leave out the OK button entirely? Clicking any of the buttons in what is now the next step could equal OK + the next step.
These are all small suggestions, but together they would save ten seconds or so on some scans. Those seconds add up when you are scanning several pages.
But overall, this is a good small scanner. The OCR, as I said, is excellent.

Device worked perfect out of the box on my PC. Work flow well thought out so easy to understand its operation. Combined with Evernote this device is a game changer for those of us who clip from books, magazines, newspapers and documents. OCR works, but it would be nice if it also worked with a more robust OCR engine. At the current pricing this is a great value.
