Sony’s compact earbuds reduce ambient noise up to 70%. For plane, train or automobile, rely on Sony’s advanced noise-cancellation to block unwanted noise—while delivering concert-quality music even at lower volumes. These earbuds reduce noise by 70% (10dB) when the noise canceling circuit is switched on. In addition, its 9mm driver units produce powerful sound for your listening enjoyment. So tune out noise at work, when you travel, or even when you are trying to sleep in a loud environment. The noise canceling circuit actually senses outside noise with built-in microphones and sends an equal-but-opposite canceling signal to the headphones. The noise canceling on/off switch located on the battery box indicates when noise canceling is operating. Additional features include the Fontopia® in-the-ear design, volume control, and a miniature connection box for a AAA battery. Includes carry case.

[...]the product is great, for the price, I've flown 4 flights on older Fokker & MD jets over the last two weeks, with these plugged into the Ipod they have performed quite well. For total noise cancelation you can't beet the over the ear model - but they take up half my carry-on.

There are people who like earbuds, and people who dislike earbuds. It's a comfort/security thing. If you enjoy earbuds in other headphones, these are well worth the money. For noise-canceling these work passably well, although personally, nothing can compare with the type that cover your whole ear which, however, are bulky and cumbersome and take a large section of your carry-on luggage.

These headphones block out the noise, plain and simple. Because Sony uses electronic noise cancellation, they fit very comfortably in the ear (they're not ear plug types where they sit very deeply and can hurt like some other ones from Shure) and the circuitry turns the noise on or off. Also, it has a volume control so if I'm on a plane and can't hear the movie veyr well I can just increase the volume to an even higher level.

My daughter needed these to use in her dorm to listen to her iPod at night and to cancel the noise of everyone slamming doors in the hall while she was trying to study or sleep. They were great while they worked but, sadly, one earbud "died" after only 2 weeks of use and we have yet to get them returned from the maker. Pretty expensive for 2 weeks of use!

Sound quality was amazing and great for planes and travel... until the left earbud quit working.

It's apparently a common problem, as on Sony's FAQ/Customer service web page, it's a "Hot Issue". All they recommend is replacement.

This is the second set (different model) of Sony's earbuds that I've had do this on me.

Stay away from the Earbuds.
