This is the BEST flashlight and radio that we have found. With hurricane season on us, this is an absolute must to have. I also purchased the flashlights without the radio to have in the cars and in the bedrooms. These are heavy duty and once cranked, stay luminated for a long time! I will be purchasing more for Christmas gifts! A MUST HAVE!!

Over the years I have lost track of how many flashlights and other small electronic devices have been ruined due to battery leakage.
The concept of never having to worry about this alone was worth the price of this product.
The title I chose was based on the impression that this approach (i.e. the hand crank to generate power) hearkens back to field radios used in WWII.
This is one of those products that makes you wonder why it's not used by everyone !
I am hoping the quality and durability of the power cells last for several years. Presumably they should last longer than the cost of replacing batteries every so often.
My initial reason for the purchase was a gift for my son. I knew it would pay for itself in battery savings alone with my son leaving the flashlight turned on as he played with the light while lying in his bed at night. The fact that he had to turn the hand crank to generate more power only added to his fascination with the product.
I chose the model that included the radio simply because the added cost was easily justified and I could see the value if and when you do find yourself in a power outage and need some contact with the outside world. I live in southern Ontario, and experienced the big power outage a few years ago that started in Ohio and New York and left some without power for a week.
In situations like that, this kind of product is suddenly worth it's weight in silver.
I have not tried the feature to recharge my Nokia cell phone, but that is another excellent idea. I recently purchased a Apple iPhone so I'm hoping an adapter will become available for that eventually (if not already).
I plan on buying this product as a gift for my parents and some other close friends as I think it is an excellent idea for cottages and RVs as well.

We need more products like this. It's not 100% green (depending on the lifespan of the built-in power cell), but it sure is a step in the right direction !!

I bought this mostly to have radio capability without batteries during an emergency. However, it's small enough to take outdoors (beach, hiking, etc.) so it might get some use.

During the recent California winter storms, our house was without power for 3 1/2 days - it was totally dark, so we were very fortunate to have had this handcrank flashlight radio for just such an emergency.

It was easy to use and depending on how much it was cranked, it provided a good 10 to 20 minutes of excellent light. In our case, we easily achieved 10 minutes with just < 1 minute of simple winding. Our traditional landed telephone line was also not operational due to downed telephone lines, but local cell phone towers were operational, so we used this device to charge my Nokia cell phone - it took only 30 seconds of charging via the Nokia connector which came with the flashlight to get at least 5 - 7 minutes of talk time; it would be even longer with a little more winding. It also has a built-in AM/FM radio receiver which also operates by simple turns of the crank and was extremely useful in time of emergency. Operation of the radio required more energy, however, so it required more frequent turns of the handle. Nevertheless, it, too was extremely helpful during this time of emergency.

In short, we were glad to have had this useful device at the right time. This is one product we want around the house, if and when the next Big One (earthquake!) occurs, or on a more common note - for camping or traveling.

We appreciated this product so much, we've just purchased a 2nd unit for the car!

Thanks, Brookstone for a great product!

Big hit for Christmas

My family is into being green so this was a great gift. I purchased 6 of these and 5 of them worked great. One had a defective screen so you couldn't read the radio station. Even though I ordered it online, I am hoping to return it to the store without incident. Overall, I found thisi to be a great buy.
