I am a NYC resident with a noisy neighbor below me who likes to watch TV or play video games late at night, and the noise comes through my floor enough to distract me when I'm trying to sleep. I got this product with the intention of using the traditional "white noise" setting to block it out, but so far have been falling asleep to the Summer Night setting. I love it! It blocks out the noise from below, and even if a little bit is still audible, it doesn't bother me now - my brain just wants to focus on the the sound of the crickets. I also feel like my sleep has been much deeper and restorative. I look forward to turning this product on every night!
Everyone writing in is correct about the bright light, but I just covered it with a black sock and it's fine.
The variety of sounds and their division into 3 areas of usefulness is great. The sounds are much better than the Sharper Image product--who likes to fall asleep to a train, or traffic noise? Not many people, I would guess.
I've been using this for over a year and there are 3 problems:
1. If a product is meant to help people sleep, under no circumstances should it add a glowing light to your bedroom. Yes, you can dim the light somewhat, but it's still too bright.
2. The buttons along the top (on/off, timer, etc.) are identical. You can't reach over in the dark and easily tell them apart.
3. This unit is touchy sometimes. At times I've had all the sound lights come on and the unit suddenly switches off.

I work the night shift and sleep during the day. This helps me block outside noises and relaxes me at the same time. Love the different sounds. I listen to meditate until I'm ready for bed. Then I use one of the sleep options. I also listen to some of the other sounds when reading as nice background "music". Love it so far!

I bought this originally to block out various sounds from the outdoors when working in my office, but find that in blocking out the outside noises, it aids in concentration and focus. It has a great variety of sounds to listen to and the volume control is excellent. Some other items like this on the market don't offer volume control so this is a big plus
I put in my earphones and set it to 30 minutes and I'm asleep in less than 5 minutes! This machine is so great...it's like the soundwaves just shut off some switch in your head and you're out like a light. I have struggled with sleeplessness for years and years but this really does the trick for me. Even if you just need to focus or calm down a bit...it really levels you out. I LOVE IT!
The first couple of nights I tried to tell myself LED light was the moon- HA!so I covered unit with terry cloth hand tip towel and the problem was solved! The stream sound takes me instantly to the peaceful riverside at "home" and I am fast asleep! Wish LED feature had off/on capability. That would make it perfect! Will be buying travel unit soon and hotels have terry cloth towels.

My husband snores LOUDLY and it is difficult to go to sleep and stay asleep but with the use of this product I have had great sleep and much more restorative sleep. One day I took a nap and my husband came in to wake me up for the Superbowl and I didn't know what day it was or where I was. I was that sound asleep. I felt GREAT afterwards.

I never thought I could fall asleep listening to a machine. But when I read about this one I thought I would give it a try, I tried to think of where I was the most relaxed and comfortable at, that I could fall asleep within a matter of minutes ? There were two places, One was at the beach laying on the sand and listening to the serf going in and out, the other was sitting on my front porch wrapped in a blanket listening to the rain. This is a great little machine. I turn it on and I'm asleep within 5 or 6 minutes.

I use this sound system primarily at night at the end of a hectic day, to soothe the mind and drift off to sleep quickly. However, I also use it whenever I have a few moments just to relax and energize at the same time...a brief afternoon rest is enhanced using the system. There are a variety of sounds far beyond the typical 'white noise machine'...far more functional...with greater relaxing qualities that can promote not only sleep but restoring ones energy level as the day moves on. It's also great for a lunch-time boost of energy. It's very user friendly with great options including 4 time options for whatever program you might choose to use. Well worth the reasonable cost...a better bargain than most other systems I have tried, purchased and donated to charity after they don't work. Used to have trouble sleeping. This machine keeps all distracting noises at bay. Small problem with light that stays on, but I just turn it face down and have no problem with it anymore.
Excellent product.
I bought our first one 2 years ago, and was impressed at the quality of sleep we were getting. Realised that we were getting up in the morning less tired (i'm sure some of you know what i mean by that).
Our second son was born and he was not a sleeper... one day my wife tried the ocean waves and he has been napping, and sleeping thru nights ever since...
Each bedroom has a sound machine and we have been handing them out at Xmas...
I've slept to 4 of the engineered sounds every night for the last 2 years. It really helps block the noise from my neighbors. If something startles me, I concentrate on the sound and fall back to sleep. I leave it on all night so it's diffinitely durable. I agree that the light is too bright so I turn it around facing the wall. I'm not dependant and can sleep without it when I'm away. Nothing lasts forever so I'm thinking of purchasing a back-up.

I use the product when you are in a hotel and there is construction going on. Without enough sleep, you are going to do some damage the next morning at meetings.

I like the variety of sounds and their descriptions--I can't say for sure whether the sounds have the intended effect on my brainwaves, but they might! The volume adjustment is good; features are easy to understand and use, even in the dark. But I did not expect the bright(!) white light that backlights the sound selection: when I use the Tranquil Moments at night (to help ease into sleep), it brightens the room. It's a challenge to find a way to block that light and still have the unit near my head so that I hear it more than my roommate does.
I got this for my wife for Christmas. It really helps relax you after a long day. We turn on "the Ocean" every night at bedtime. It helps to concentrate on something other than your daily routine or hassels. It seems a bit expensive for something that just makes noise, but kids do the same thing and look how much they cost.

This is a very good product. Kind of expensive but I'm glad I bought it. It is true that the light on the front is very bright in a dark room. An obvious flaw in design since this product is meant for sleeping. I just put a piece of black cloth over it and it's fine. However, My husband snores like a freight train and I was dying to find anything that would help me drown it out and get some sleep. I will admit that I have to use ear plugs too but the noises give me something else to focus on and I am able to sleep. This machine saved me. I like the "white noise", "thunderstorm", and "unwind" the best for drowning out snoring. For relaxation, I really like "ocean surf" set on "enhance". I am very happy with this purchase and will probably get another one for my baby after he is born. Can't part with mine.

This product is great if you have a newborn that sleeps better with white noise. With our first child, we had a white noise machine that would abruptly turn off after 20 minutes, which would cause her to wake up. With our second child, we purchased this "Sound Therapy System" and it has great options for auto shut off after 30, 60, or 90 minutes, or you can leave it on. And when it turns off, it gradually turns down the sound so the sudden absence of sound doesn't wake your child up. It is a bit pricey, but worth it given the functionality and design.

Would love to be able to leave this on all night, my husband wakes up every 90 min. to turn it back on...haven't had it long enough to know if it will last . A hundred bucks is a good value if it has longevity.

Nice little system, very relaxing. I used to listen the TV to put me to sleep, but the bright flashes and sudden loud commercials made it a bit difficult. All I wanted was a little background noise and this product helped.

I've used sound machines for forty-five years, ever since my mother purchased a noisy dehumidifier and placed it outside my bedroom door when I was a kid. When I was at college, I used a fan. Then I found a real white noise machine in a medical supply catalog. I used that one-sound level white noise machine for most of my adult years. This is the first time I've tried a high-tech noise machine. I am very pleased with Brookstone's model. It's attractive and the noise selection is interesting. I do admit I use the "white noise" function the most, but it's excellent and I like that I can change the turn the sound up and down. The light on the display is a little bright. I don't know the reason for that. They should install a dimmer for it. That would make the machine practically perfect. My three teenage daughters really like my new machine and I am planning on purchasing one for each of them.

We use this product for relaxing before bedtime and sometimes for pain therapy or while reading. It can be moved from room to room or taken on trips with you. The sound can be up to 90 minutes which gives you plenty of time to relax. If you awake in the night you can turn it back on to go right back into a wonderful sleep. Everything is great about it.

My wife has at least one or two nights per week where falling asleep is difficult. Since starting the Tranquil Moments playing at bedtime, she has fewer nights of watching the clock -- it truly lulls you into sleep. Listening to the night crickets tricks the mind into thinking that you're camping! The light is a bit bright, but turned away from the bed, its not a big deal. Much cheaper as well than running a costly buzzing fan all night [with no auto shut-off]. A great invention for the occasional tosser/turner!

I used to prefer it perfectly quiet when I went to sleep. After purchasing the Sound Therapy System, I fall asleep to the crashing of waves! It is very relaxing and soothing and helps you wind down after a stressful day! Love it!!!
The only thing I'm not completly crazy about is the light, I like the room totally dark, and this does have a small light that stays on all the time.

It's pricier than some, but it looks and sounds great.
My son gave it to us for Christmas and we use it every night. I have problems sleeping, but have been able to totally eliminate the PM pills that I used to take. Even when I can't get back to sleep, this device allows me to doze. I'm not fond of the non-nature sounds, but there are plenty of good natural sounds. Our favorite is rain.

I bought the unit for my husband, but I found that I am also sleeping much better. One of the symptoms of menopause is sleep loss. This unit has helped alleviate that problem for me. I never would have believed it!!

I turn on the soothing sounds as we go to bed.
After the 1st 10 minutes or so, both of us are ready to fall asleep. I really like the timer and the volume control. It is also small enough to sit on a night stand. I bought one for all 3 of my adult children and they tell me that it has really helped them get to sleep quickly and stay asleep.

On a weekend afternoon, if I want to take a nap, I turn on "serenity" and am off like a light. My husband likes the "ocean waves" to lull him to sleep. It clears your mind from spinning with thoughts so you can drift off into tranquality and restful sleep. He also takes it to his office when trying to seriously read without outside disturbances. We've had other sound machines before, but find this one has far better sound quality and a far better choice of sounds. We both love it!

Before I got this device, I thought wow cool something that can help me go to sleep rather than listening to a silent, creaky house. Then I read the reviews from people who think it's a great device and all of that positive hype. Well it's really not worth all that hype and I don't know what models they have, but mine isn't all that great.
It's got a soft rubbery touch panel that is sleek looking and able to fit on some nightstands by the alarm clock. It is a tad big though. When you turn it on, it automatically goes to the last setting you had. Also the light eminating from this device when you use it as a sleep aid is a nuisance. Unless you wear an eye mask to sleep, the soft white light from the sound selections can be bothersome. Not to mention some of the sounds such as Celestial and Serenity sound alike with very minor differences in tone. The volume is also quite loud even at the lowest setting possible.
This device does have redeeming value in that it is great to have on if you are reading a book or working in an office environment. Not so great as a sleep aid for me but everyone has a different sound that helps them fall asleep. And it is nice to set a 30, 60 & 90 minute timer on it.
If a friend has it, ask to borrow it first or see if they have a demo of this in the actual stores and see for yourself. I wouldn't recommend this though.

I loved this item so much that I went to your store in my local mall and bought 2 as gifts to give at Christmas!
This sound therapy machine is one of the best investments that I have ever made. The sound quality really makes you feel that you are there. Once I woke up and thought that I was at the ocean, another time I thought that the TV had been left on. I sleep so soundly when this thing is on that I have accidently overslept for a couple of occasions. I reccomend that you use a loud alarm clock as a precautionary measure.
This is a wonderful product and not cheap, but Brookstone cheapens it by some very tricky language when saying "includes headphone jack" which it does...but there are no earbuds or a headphone with it. At [$]Brookstone could spring for the former and hardly notice it in their margins.
In the past few years, I have often felt that my lack of sleep has really ruined my life. My husband gave this to me for Christmas, so I have only used it for a few nights, but I'm already hooked on it. It helps me get to sleep a lot more quickly, and I don't wake up as often (I keep it on all night).
Some of the sounds didn't seem that appealing when I first tried them, but they grew on me; after listening to them for a while, I have found them all quite soothing.
I love this machine, and would not want to be without it!

This product is just about as good as it gets, except for the following:
1. The control panel backlight control is too bright for trying to go to sleep, even at the lowest setting and even though the product 'box' states it has four levels of adjustable brightness (including off), it cannot be turned 'off'! When retiring for the evening, I have to resort to covering the control panel with something to hide the light. It really needs to be adjustable to off! Also, a more subdued color besides 'white' would be recommended.
2. The volumn controls are backwards. Up is on the left and Down is on the right. They should be Down on the Left and Up on the Right.
