Each has a built-in electronic timer, to extend the life of the required 3 AAA batteries (not included). It will stay on for up to 6 hours, and then automatically shut off. It will turn itself on again at the same time every following night.

The lights are pretty, but only stay lit for about a week due to wearing out the batteries. The hooks are plastic and break easily. I know that next year I will hang them outside only a week before Christmas.
