This is a fine product, but it does not replace a fast, accurate, digital thermometer.
Probe is designed for durability but you pay the price: the probe diameter is overly large and leaves a large whole in the food where used. Also, partly because of the large probe diameter, the themometer is very slow.
Further, the programmming options on the main unit are few and there is no built in timer. In addition, my unit requires frequent manual resets to stay in synch. Together, these issues make the thermometer useless for quick-grilled items and most fish.
By itself, these might be fatal flaws. Still, in conjunction with a real fast reading thermometer like the Thermapen, this can be very helpful for long-cooked items and when you are trying to coordinate many activities. MUCH hgher quality than a Taylor-style digital oven thermometer.

All in all a nice device, but I have not found that the probes hold up. I generally order 3 to 4 spares and keep them on hand for the suprise problems that occur when a probe breaks (either food is shown as done when it first goes into the oven or on the grill, or temperature readings are warmer than they should be).
I have exercised care to ensure that probe wiring is routed as far away from the oven heating element as possible, and routed over the "non-coal basket" area of my Webber grill, but this has not been sufficient to preven problems. It would be desirable if a more durable probe was made available.
It is hard to recommend this product to a friend with my current experience with the probes.

Comments about Grill Alert Talking Remote Meat Thermometer:
I got one of these as a birthday gift several years ago and used it all the time for family cook outs. I just replaced it with a new one because I made the mistake of leaving the batteries in it over the winter and they ruptured and corroded the original unit beyond repair. This device tracks temperature of your entree very accurately and really makes it easy to relax and not worry about over cooking the main attractions or serving stuff under done. Allows you to hit it right on the nose every time. Only criticism that I have is that temperature settings for some items are too conservatively high. For instance the unit will tell you steak is done at 135F if you specify you want it rare. In my experience, if you really want your beef rare, it should come off the grill at 115F and be allowed to rest until reaching 125F at which point it is perfect. It also tells you to cook all pork to 170F. Maybe your grandfather did that but good modern chefs realize that 150F pork is perfectly safe and a lot more succulent. This is no problem though really because you can just watch the temperature on the moniter and remove the meat when it is to your liking.

Comments about Grill Alert Talking Remote Meat Thermometer:
This device is as much at home in the kitchen as at the grill. No more opening and closing the oven or grill to check how things are doing. I particularly like the countdown function enabling you to get ready for the big "done" moment. This is our second purchase. This one for another home.

Comments about Grill Alert Talking Remote Meat Thermometer:
This product works so much better than expected! I can cook to perfection by touch. My boyfriend on the other hand is challenged still. I'm teaching him. But in the meantime - this is great! I read the directions, and all the reviews, and basically to cook something to the desired degree you have to use your logic. Because it has it's preset settings, you either use the setting for a different meat or take the meat off when the thing starts talking to you! Don't wait until it tells you it's done totally. Plus there's a temp gauge so you can read any recipe book and then use that. Love this thing because I work later than he does and now our dinners are cooked perfectly :)

Comments about Grill Alert Talking Remote Meat Thermometer:
The concept behind the product is great. Unfortuneatly, it preforms irratically. If you are expecting guests and are relying on the timer to do what it is advertised to do beware...you may be sorely disappointed. It worked fine...until the 30 day warranty had expired, but after that it was undependable. Sometimes it would sense the temperature and other times not. It might start sensing the temp and then in the middle of cooking a piece of meat it would mal function and stop sensing the temp. Obviously you can ruin a lot of meat that way. We don't move the monitor and it is within 20 feet of the transmitter. Maybe in the future they will fix the problem...then it would be great.

Comments about Grill Alert Talking Remote Meat Thermometer:
We have had this unit for at least 6 or 7 years absolutely could not be without it. Certain foods such as chicken, turkey, and pork must be done the to perfect temperture or they become dry very quickly. This item makes that very easy. Last week I made a perfect beef wellington because I knew exactly when to pull it from the oven. I can put foods on the grill or in the oven go anywhere in the house or yard and be notified when the food is ready. It warns you when the food is within 5 degrees of the target temp giving you time to get to it. Its also been pretty durable. After many years of being clamped in the oven door and grill hood, I finally had to replace the probe this year.

Comments about Grill Alert Talking Remote Meat Thermometer:
Great concept and nice product versus another I bought elsewhere that failed quickly. Very convenient. Seems well built. That said, it has a fatal flaw: the pre set temps cannot be changed except for beef--- and the pork and poultry settings are way high versus USDA guidelines (and common sense for meat that tastes good).
Grill Alert setting for pork is 170 but USDA is 145. Grill Alert setting for poultry is 180 but USDA setting is 165. Frustrasting error and inability to set your own temps. My previous review was never posted by Brookstone so we'll see if this gets posted.

Comments about Grill Alert Talking Remote Meat Thermometer:
This works well, when it works. I do wish I could just set the temperature myself instead of using their presets but there are enough of them that it works out OK. Its biggest weakness is the probe. I'm on my third one in about 4 years of ownership. I guess the good news is they're relatively cheap (about 20 bucks with shipping) and easy to get from Brookstone. The downside is when they fail just when you're about to cook for 12 hungry people.
Pros
- Remote Temp
Cons
- Cannot Set Alert Temp

Comments about Grill Alert Talking Remote Meat Thermometer:
if you enjoy your meat cooked rare, the alert function on this is useless. The photo on the box shows it set for beef medium, target temp of 145 deg F. The actual unit sets a target of 160 deg F for medium. The target temp for rare is 135 deg F. I find steaks are best if removed from the grill when they hit a temp of about 122 deg F. I'm not sure whether I will take this thing back or just us it as a remote temp indicator.
