The F4U Corsair is a carrier-based fighter aircraft manufactured by Chance Vought in 16 separate models.

The F4U-1 variant was the first Corsair with the original cockpit seat height and bird cage canopy. The F4U-1 was based on the X4U; it has a larger fuel tank, a modified armament with six Browning MG53-2 0.50 machine guns, and its fuselage windows behind the canopy have been removed. Gregory "Pappy" Boyington was credited for 22 kills in F4Us. The F4U Corsair was in active service in early 1943 and the first combat engagement was on February 14, 1943. F4U Corsair served as fighter bombers in the Central Pacific and the Philippines. In the beginning of 1945, the Corsair performed strikes with high-explosive bombs, napalm tanks and HVARs and its versatility made it a prominent participant in the fighting for the Palaus, Iwo Jima and Okinawa Prefecture. The F4U Corsair quickly became the most capable carrier-based fighter-bomber of World War II.

F4U Corsairs saw service with the US Navy, US Marines, Fleet Air Arm and the Royal New Zealand Air Force, French Aeronavale and other postwar services.
