Jaques of London has a long history with chess. In 1849, the proprietor of the illustrated London News, Nathaniel Cooke, brought a new design of Chessmen to John Jaques. This design was then developed by the two men, and became what is known as the Staunton chessmen. The effect of the Staunton design on the world of chess has been immeasurable, with the Staunton Chessmen the standard for world championship matches.
This beautiful wooden chess and backgammon compendium is a stunning example of the craftsmanship and quality that Jaques of London are renowned for. This wonderful piece features a 15” x 15” mahogany cabinet with decorative maple and walnut inlays on the chess board, while the reverse features an inlaid backgammon board. A set of Jaques' famous Boxwood Staunton chessmen, heavyweight backgammon pieces and dice, shaker cups and full game rules are included.
