A Fixture at the Original Yankee Stadium (1923-2008) the centerfield bleachers commonly referred to as "The Black" served two distinct purposes. Located directly behind the pitcher's back The Black functioned as batter's eye, providing contrast against the white baseball for purposes of hitting. Secondly it served as a target for some of the most mammoth home runs in Yankee Stadium history.
